Make a Bouncy Ball from Scratch

I absolutely love when the kids get bored, we do a quick search on Pinterest, they find something they like, and we have all the ingredients or materials lying around the house! Best feeling in the world! The latest 'experiment' they wanted to do was make bouncy balls from scratch. I would say this recipe/formula isn't a total Fail, but a Patience Pin. Here's what happened:

What you'll Need:

  • Borax
  • Cornstarch
  • Glue (white glue makes an opaque ball, clear or blue glue makes a translucent ball)
  • Food coloring

What you Do:

Label one cup "Borax Solution" and the other cup "Ball Mixture".
Pour 2 Tablespoons warm water and 1 1/2 teaspoon Borax into the cup labeled "Borax Mixture". Stir well & add food coloring if you want.

Pour 1 Tablespoon of glue into the cup labeled "Ball Mixture". Add 1/2 teaspoon of the Borax Solution you just made and 1 Tablespoon of cornstarch. DO NOT STIR. Let the ingredients interact for about 10-15 seconds and then stir.

Once the mixture becomes impossible to stir, take out the mixture and start molding it with your hands. Note: It will be very sticky and gooey at first. This is where I let the kids play with it and squish it in their hands. Once their hands were too sticky I took over and by then it was kneaded enough that it was hardening. There are little bumps in it from all the cornstarch, if you pop those between your hands the chemicals all react better and it will harden into a ball quicker. Once it starts hardening and is no longer sticky, roll between your hands to form a ball.

You can start bouncing when the ball is not sticky and semi hard. I found that they didn't bounce that high until the next day.

We left ours out overnight. You should store it in a plastic bag though. "
The kids thought this one was a fail, but it actually worked, just not to their expectations I guess. They did have fun making them though and they all enjoyed their 'ball'. One of the balls didn't turn into a ball at all, it just stayed squishy and we played with it like 'flubber', which was fun anyways. This pin is a good one, it is super quick and not that messy to do, and if your anything like me you have a good stock of Borax for your laundry detergent. Overall good pin. Good Luck. As always, Let me know if you try this!
